Ehrlichia canis (E. canis), a small, gram-negative alpha-proteobacterium, belongs to genus Ehrlichia in order Rickettsiales (Mavromatis, 2006). E. canis infection results in a variety of acute and chronic clinical syndromes, including leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, fever, depression and anorexia. The acute phase of ehrlichiosis generally lasts 2-4 weeks. E. canis detection by PCR is the most sensitive and specific method for the diagnosis of E. canis infection.
